A society where women thrive in terms of health and education is an ideal society. Sri Kurumba Trust addresses various issues women face and runs several programmes for them.
Under the ‘Young Mother Rehabilitation Programme’, the trust supports young widows and their children to live together in individual, self-contained flats. Special arrangements are made for their safety, security, and welfare at absolutely no cost. While all these women are employed at the SOBHA Academy, their children are enrolled there as students. Support is also provided if they want to get remarried. So far, 7 of the 18 young widows have remarried with the help of the trust.
Through the ‘Rural Women Empowerment Programme’, financial support is extended to widowed mothers’. So far, 35 widowed mothers’ from underprivileged backgrounds and their 63 children are covered by the project. They are provided with a basic monthly living allowance, clothing, medical and other personal accessories. Educational expenses of their children are also met by the trust to give them adequate opportunity to come up in life. In addition to this, the trust focuses on increasing employment opportunities for women – 75% of the trust’s employees are women.
The ‘Dowry-free Social Wedding Program’ organises social weddings without dowries, to help young couples whose families do not have the resources to conduct a wedding. The trust also gives marriage counselling to these couples and has successfully completed 667 weddings to date. A sum of Rs. 53 million was spent till 2019.
Sri Kurumba Trust is actively engaged in sustainability practices. Its green initiatives in the areas of water recycling, ground water recharging, solar energy, and waste management are making a huge difference to the land and lives of people in various places of Palakkad district.
Taking care of the elderly in their golden years is the responsibility of the society. The Sri Kurumba Trust runs SOBHA Hermitage – a comfortable home for senior citizens with all necessary amenities, personalised care, and round-the-clock medical facilities. The trust also runs a free community feeding programme.
The Community Home Project of the trust plans to build 1,000 houses in the next four years for underprivileged families in Palakkad district. The trust had been highly active in providing relief to flood-hit families and assisting them for the reconstruction of their damaged houses.
Ever since inception, SOBHA Healthcare has redefined the limits of primary healthcare institutions anywhere in the country. The facility provides free and quality healthcare to those who can’t afford to pay for their treatments at private hospitals.
SOBHA Academy, started in 2007, is a CBSE English medium school with over 1,200 students. Each year, 90 eligible girl students from less privileged backgrounds in Vadakkenchery, Kizhakkenchery and Kannambra panchayats of Palakkad district in Kerala get admitted to the school. This enables and empowers the disadvantaged sections of the rural population to break away from the vicious circle of poverty, ignorance, deprivation, and exclusion by providing high quality education to their children.
SOBHA Icon provides a two-year, full-time, on-campus, professional college enrolment-oriented programme in science and commerce. The intense and technology-driven programme admits 60 students in each stream. It is affiliated to the Kerala State Council for Open and Lifelong Education and is registered as an open regular programme of Directorate of Higher Secondary Education. Selected students are trained intensively for 8 hours a day, 6 days a week, and 270 days a year.
