When a girl child is educated, the society makes a move forward.
Education for Girls
SOBHA Academy
SOBHA Academy, started in 2007, is a CBSE English medium school with over 1,200 students. Each year, 90 eligible girl students from less privileged backgrounds in Vadakkenchery, Kizhakkenchery and Kannambra panchayats of Palakkad district in Kerala get admitted to the school. This enables and empowers the disadvantaged sections of the rural population to break away from the vicious circle of poverty, ignorance, deprivation, and exclusion by providing high quality education to their children.
The school has world-class infrastructure and maintains international teacher – student ratio. The students are provided with free academic and integrated support such as books, stationery, school bags, transportation, uniforms including undergarments and sanitary pads, food, and healthcare. Teachers visit the students’ houses and counselling is given to both students and parents regularly.
SOBHA Academy has been bringing a positive change to the families of the three panchayats ever since inception. Dropping out of school, which was common earlier, has been reduced considerably. Families started prioritising education for their children and realised the need to shun habits that are a deterrent to progress, such as alcohol abuse. When children realised the importance of discipline and hygiene, they passed it on to their families. Parents started setting goals for their children and grew confident that they can come up in life. Thus, setting a new benchmark in school education, SOBHA Academy acts as catalyst of social change.
Today, students who have come out of the portals of SOBHA Academy are either excelling in their chosen professions or diligently pursuing studies to attain their goals.
SOBHA Icon
SOBHA Icon provides a two-year, full-time on campus, professional college enrolment-oriented programme in science and commerce. The intense and technology-driven programme admits 60 students in each stream.
It is affiliated to the Kerala State Council for Open and Lifelong Education and is registered as an open regular programme of Directorate of Higher Secondary Education. Selected students are trained intensively for 8hours a day, 6 days a week, and 270 days a year.
The programme was started to facilitate students who had the potential but not the means to pursue higher studies. It has three segments:
- Extensive training and support for students from grades 8 to 10 based on their potential.
- Intensive higher secondary education programme to prepare students of grades 11 and 12 for college education.
- Guidance and mentoring for students who wish to pursue UG studies.
If adequate training is provided, students from underprivileged backgrounds studying in rural schools can realise their true potential.
Four former students of SOBHA Icon who are currently doing their postgraduate courses have been awarded with the Chief Minister’s ‘Student Talent Award’ 2022, which are given to students who graduate with the highest score in various subjects every year from the universities in the state. Each award consists of a cash reward of Rs. 1 lakh and a merit certificate.
As of March 2022, the graduates of SOBHA Icon secured scholarships worth over INR 135 million from IIT, IISER, Azim Premji University, Ashoka University, and other prominent universities.
